Interpreting the rose: sculpture as you’ve never see it before – at the point where art, fashion, and beauty intersect.

From the age of twelve, Canadian-born Mark Fast dreamed of being a fashion designer. Today, he is one of the world’s most distinctive creators of knitwear – a term hardly sufficient to describe the sensual and strikingly sculptural products of his art.

Using stitching techniques of his own devising, Fast exploits the potential of various blends of Lycra with wool, angora, or viscose to create areas of tension and volume as he hand-forms his garments to the curves of a woman’s body. It is a deeply personal process, one he has described as “very organic . . . a very abstract expressionist way of working.”

Now this remarkable designer further transcends the boundary between art, fashion, and beauty by creating an installation exclusively for Luminato. Descending from its surroundings, a knit sculpture evokes the symbol of eternal femininity – the rose.

Be sure to experience this extraordinary undertaking by one of the fashion world’s boldest innovators.

Now in its fourth year, Luminato is an annual ten-day celebration where Toronto's stages, streets, and public spaces are illuminated with arts and creativity. Luminato is a multi-disciplinary festival of theatre, dance, classical and contemporary music, film, literature, visual arts, design and more.

Luminato is a charitable, not-for-profit, cultural organization whose vision is to commission and present significant local, national and international programming that reflects the city of Toronto as a diverse and accessible city that engages domestic and international audiences. Luminato brings Toronto's light to the world, and the world's light to Toronto.
